Microchipping - important for all pets, tortoises too!
Corporal Ravage came to see Vet Alex to have his microchip placed. This was injected just under the skin in his left hind leg - different from the traditional back of the neck as we do in cats / dogs and rabbits for example. It is not uncommon for tortoises go wandering and break free from their outdoor enclosures or gardens. We urge all tortoise owners to ensure their pets are microchipped and as with all pets, that your contact details are kept up-to-date. It's worth noting that as from June this year, microchipping will be mandatory in all cats under the age of 16 weeks.
Vet Alex was helped by Nurse Abi to keep spur-thighed tortoise, Corporal Ravage still while his skin was cleaned and the needle injected. After the microchip was implanted Vet Alex used some surgical tissue glue to completely seal the tiny hole left behind. Corporal Ravage was none the wiser and happily explored the ward floor while we tidied up our equipment!
We encourage all owners to take and safely keep, photos of their tortoise's unique carapace and plastron markings, for further identification purposes.
